Places in Guatemala: Nebaj - Juwel high among the Cuchumatanes

High among the Cuchumatanes lie the Ixil Maya village of Nebaj Quiché. The scenery is breathtakingly beautiful, and the local people, remote from the cultural influences of modern urbanity, proudly preserve their ancient way of life. Nebaj and the surrounding villages were perhaps the most affected area during the civil war of Guatemala, where thousands of indigenous people lost their lives in brutal ways.

Many of the old guatemaltecan people are still branded by the civil war. Thousands of indigenous lost their lives in brutal ways. During the civil war there was barely a family that was not affected by the death of a friend or relative.
